I agree with the position that if you are smart with your money, you will not need debt settlement, but what about the majority of the population that spent the last decade living high on the hog?

I have been through this program and it works. It is not painless but it does work. The system is broken and I left college with $60K in credit card debt and I never had to show any proof of income anywhere.

As the Legislative Chair for USOBA, the most established debt settlement trade association in the country, I was disappointed to see a mischaracterization of the debt settlement industry in your article “A Frugal Shopper Will Not Need Credit Card Debt Settlement”.

Debt settlement isn’t for everyone—but for consumers in serious debt, it can be their last resort before bankruptcy.
The majority of consumers who enroll in a debt settlement program are burdened with serious hardships, such as long-term job loss or sudden illness or death in the family. Often struggling under credit card bills in attempt to stay afloat, these consumers require the results of a debt settlement program that works to reduce their balance and become debt free, as opposed to a credit counseling program with forces consumers to repay 100% of their balance, in addition to ongoing interest and fees. Debt settlement also offers tremendous advantage over bankruptcy. As reported by FICO, bankruptcy can damage a person’s score by up to 280 points, as opposed to a temporary 125 point reduction under debt settlement.

Debt Settlement, bankruptcy and even credit counseling are all debt management and relief vehicles with their own unique merit. Research shows that debt settlement offers significant value, leaving many customers significantly better off than plans offered by the debt management companies. As consumers decide whom to use for debt settlement services, we suggest they look for companies with transparent disclosures, trained and certified debt specialists, a thorough personal budget analysis to determine suitability for their program, bonding, and a consumer education process included with the program.

Programs that reduce the debt principal owed (and not just the finance and miscellaneous bank charges) are critical for cash strapped Americans. Programs that reduce debt principal owed are critical for consumers in financial duress, especially in today’s economic environment.

Debt Settlement clients are from all walks of life and all parts of the country. The majority faces a legitimate financial hardship – namely, job loss, layoffs, medical bills, divorce or even a death in the family. Financial crises don’t typically happen overnight; the seeds are usually planted months, often years before bankruptcy, eviction, repossession, foreclosure or other disasters ruin people’s financial lives. Moreover, it often takes a year, two or even more to get out of debt. These debt settlement companies provide clients with a fresh start and the opportunity to live debt-free. They act on behalf of consumers, negotiating directly with creditors to facilitate repayment of consumer debts at a reduced percentage of the total amount owed. There is no doubt that Americans desperately need immediate debt-relief options in today’s economy.

Not really. It's pretty much just as a bad as bankrupcy. I settled for a few of mine and ended up filing Chapter 7 anyway. Card Cards are a bunch of jerks!

I have the Citi Bank Platinum Select card and love it. APR is 8.49% no annual fee, and I get rewards. I would strongly reccommend this card but I also have a Bank Of America card that I use all the time. Both cards are great. One thing you should make sure you do is apply through the site below. They pay your their commission when you apply for a credit card. I got $30. Good luck:)

Should you just want to get out of credit debt and take advantage of Obama’s personal unsecured debt relief plan then at this time there has never been a more beneficial time to do so. A mixture of federal government stimulus money in addition to a widespread anxiety amongst the bulk of credit card companies [...]
