You have to be careful about developing a worthwhile surveying tool. It's useless to spend all your time getting results if what you're asking is unusable. The key is to ask simple, unbiased questions. Using scales or lists is much easier to classify, but the in-depth data comes from asking open-ended questions. If you live in a city with a university/college you may want to contact a research methods class and see if they are willing to take on your research as a class project for a small fee. Getting it done right can save you a fortune in the long run.
If you do decide to go to the mall and do it yourself, remember that you need permission to do this, and you will be kicked out if you don't get this. Also don't expect miracles, during my last set of 'on-site' interviews, it was sometimes difficult to get my required 10 interviews in the 5 hour shift, and I was offering $5 to each person who completed it!

You create discipline in your personal financial life. By having a budget and a plan for bill payment you are more likely to have a sense of what you can afford to purchase. One trick to thinking about your personal finance is realize that your gross pay is not your real pay. I realize you are aware of the taxes pulled from your paycheck. But, it is easy, from an emotional point of view, to tell yourself that your income is X thousand per year. Most of us use our gross as the figure we "make." That is flawed, I feel, because the net take home is the true way to always think about earned income. I pay all of my bills on the day received. It gives me an instant picture of my consumer spending power. Since I am basically as undisciplined as 13 year old, this brings some financial and emotional order into my life. Build your own bag of tricks that best suits you. With more discipline comes better command of your knowledge your financial status and accordingly the feasibility of your financial goals. It is a personal method for each of us. But, knowing your weaknesses and learning to hate debt will carry your plans forward.
